Cheap but effective, it caught me off guard long enough that I let it get close enough to hurt me. If they can do that much, I don't think we have seen the worst of it yet.

[ He begins to type out his reply to the reassurance but stops midway, deleting it. After sending the first part, he eventually switches over to video, as what he has to say next wouldn't feel as genuine over text. When he says something with any weight to someone, he would rather be able to look them in the eye when he does so.

His expression is grim for a moment before he flashes the screen a short-lived smile. ]

Nikolai, is it?

There's only once, and on rare occasions twice, a month that I'm not in my right mind. Lately I've found myself sleeping during the daylight hours and patrolling the streets at night for any signs of trouble. If you need someone there to keep an eye on you some nights, I will volunteer. It might make me sound like a madman, but I've dealt with my fair share of monsters. I'm not stupid enough to provoke one but, should something go wrong, it would be another line of defense.

As for us meeting on the battlefield as our other selves, I hope it doesn't come to that. If it does.. [ His jaw clenches for a moment, then: ] You're right, at least no one else would be involved.

[ Nikolai takes his cue from Ethan, switching over to the video setting. He had wanted to be sure of discretion for this conversation and so he is currently tucked away in his basement room. It's clean and tidy, but rather bleak nonetheless: a windowless space with stone walls that visibly have thick chains bolted into them in several places around a small bed. As for the man himself, Nikolai looks about as opposite to a monster as one could imagine: young and bright-eyed, not a single blond hair out of place. ]

That's an extremely kind offer, Ethan. I'm hopeful that I won't need to take you up on it any time in the near future. My current accommodations are as secure as I could hope for. However, if on those patrols you ever spot a creature around my size flying above the city... then I may need to call upon your experience with monsters.

[ At least that's one advantage to the total lack of wildlife in this place. If the monster ever did get out, no one would see it in the sky and mistake it for anything but what it was. ]

I don't wish to take up too much of your time, especially after the terrible night you've had. I will collect the supplies I need to replicate my security measures here for you and contact you before the next full moon. But- truly, if you need me before then, even if just to talk, I am entirely at your disposal.
